Fuel Cell Components
-
A fuel cell is predominantly comprised of two bipolar plates
i) Anode
ii) Cathode
They are separated by a Catalyst and Electrolyte material.
-
The two primary components of a Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM) fuel cell are
i) Membrane Electrode Assembly(MEA)
ii) Hardware surrounding it.
- The MEA includes
i) The electrolyte membrane
ii)The catalyst layers
iii) The gas diffusion layers
where the chemical reactions take place to generate electricity.
- Materials usually found in the MEA includes
i) Polymers, ionomers
ii)Platinum powder (as the catalyst)
iii) Coated carbon paper (to avoid rapid water build-up).
- The hardware surrounding the MEA includes
i)The bipolar plates
ii) Gaskets.
